Center Basketball Program To Be At Dudley Gymnasium RECREATIONAL NEWS According to an announce ment today by Eugene Levette, Supervisor of Centers and Play grounds, D i s t r ic t 2 of the Greensboro Parks and Recrea tion Department, the Dudley High School gymnasium has been secured for use by the Recreation Department each Saturday from 9:00 a. m. -1:00 p. m., beginning Saturday, No vember 25th to operate a basket ball program for boys who de tire to play with an organized league team. Leagues will be organized for boys in the following age classi fications: Pee Wee League is for boys 7-9 years old; Midget League for boys 10-12 years old and Jr. Teen League is for boys 13-15 years old. Levette reported that we are elated over securing the use of the gymnasium until the com pletion of the New Windsor Community Center. This facility will give the boys in this area somewhere to play basketball. This program will be h~l every Saturday at Dudley Hi h School gymnasium. Upon com pletion of the new Windsor Ce~ ter this basketball program will be moved to the new Cen'e gymnasium. The new Center will have adjustable baske'ba' goals. This is why we are init1 ating a basketball program fa boys 7-9 years for the first time Levette stated. All boys are to bring T-shirt, shorts and tennis shoes. Kenneth A. Free, newly appointed Center Director of the new Windsor Center, will be in charge of this program. The Annual Senior Citizen? Thanksgiving Dinner was held at Warnersville Center on Wednesday, November 15, 1967 at 11:30 a. m., it was disclosed by Mrs. Constance Griffin, Act ing Director at Warnersville Center. The Warnersville Senior Citi ens Club served as host for the I't'air. Mrs. Grace Brown was nistress of ceremonies; Eugene .evette, Supervisor of Centers 'nd Playgrounds, District 2, ?'ave the welcome remarks. About seventy-five Senior Citi ?en Club members attended this iffair. The following persons won priaes donated by local business firms: Mrs. Pearl Ha "an, Mr. P. G. Gray, Mrs. Dolls Couch, Mrs. Clarette Phifpr, Mrs. Lenna Donnell, Mrs. Vic toria Sellars and Mrs. Lillie Sharpe. Mrs. Myrtle C. Coney, Direc tor of Morningside Recreation Center revealed that the Senioi Citizens Club members will visit Evergreen Nursing Home or Wednesday, November 22, 1967 and carry fruit to be given to the residents. A "Can Dance" is scheduled also on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Admission is by a can of food. All food will be given to a needy family. 8G i.oi>eil In Usher Board Baby Contest; Baby Meyon Hontley Wins Baby Contest was held on Sunday, November 19 at Union Memorial Methodist Church. The contest was sponsored by The Greensboro Usher's Union and a total of $317.80 was raised. A brief program was rendered by the various churches' usher boards, which made up the Un ion. Solos, dramatic readings and songs centered around Thanks giving comprised the program. Churches and babies were Collen's Grove Methodist Church, which presented Meyon Huntley S70.00. He won top prize. Meyon's picture is above. Mt. Tabor Methodist ? Reginald Erwin ? $64.50, won second prize. The other babies were as follows: Raleigh Cross Road ? Victor Hickman, $40.00; Union Memorial ? Crystal Murray. $39.50; Bethel Church? Baby C. R. Craig, $27.50; St. Matthew Methodist ? Baby Brown, $22.00, Mt. Zion A.M.E. ? Baby Laddy, llaby Meyon Huntley $20.00; New Goshen ? Sylvia Teague, $19.00; St. Stephen ? Baby Shortie Clark, $17.50; Bass Chapel ? Baby Sandford, $14.00; and Swift Street ? Tom Broadnax, $1.30. BETHEL A M E CHURCH NEWS Western North Carolina Annual Conference A chartered busload and sev eral carloads of Bethelites at tended the closing session of the Western North Carolina Confer ence Sunday, November 19, in Durham, N. C. Bishop George W. Baber, Presiding Bishop was in charge. The service was held in the auditorium of Hiljside High School in order to take care of the crowd in attendance. Rev. P R. Cousin, Pastor of St. Joseph A. M. E. Church was host pastor. Bishop Baber delivered the closing message, using as a gen eral theme, "Let Us Continue." Appointments were read by the Bishop. Dr. Leon S. Penn, Sr., our Pastor, is back at Bethel. :hoir Rehearsals The Bethelites will meet each Monday at 4:30 P. M. The Gospel Choir meets each Monday at 8:00 P. M. The Youth Choir meets 3:30 P. M. each Saturday. The Senior Choir rehearses fol lowing the morning worship service on Sunday after noon. Church Kitchen See the list and make your donation for the "Kitchen Show er" which is being conducted by the Susie B. Dudley Club. Thanksgiving Spirit Gifts of canned goods, staple foods and other articles were shared with the sick, shut-ins, and aged members and friends of Bethel Church during the Thanksgiving season. Bundles were tarried to the church and were packaged and delivered by members of the Winnie Lewis Missionary Circle. Mrs. Aleece Faulkner and Rev. Penn wish to thank all who remembered to give. Annual Fellowship Tea | The Susie B. Dudley Club of Bethel Church will sponsor their Annual Tea, Sunday, November 26, in the Fellowship Hall of the church immediately following the morning worship service. Begonia Garden Club Activities Dec. 15: The Begonia Garden Club met in the home of Mrs. Samuel Headen, North Dudley Street for their regular meeting. The President, Mrs. James E. Burnett presided. During the short business session, plans for participation in the annual Christmas Party of the Council of Garden Clubs to be held on December 4, at Pearson Street i Branch YWCA were made. Following the business session the President presented Mrs. Samuel Headen who, in keeping with the State-Wide Conserva tion Program of the Federation of Garden Clubs of North Caro lina, gave the first of a series of six conservation activities ? a lecture on The Conservation of Birds. Mrs. Headen was assisted by her sister, Mrs. Reid. The lecture was highlighted by a record which identified 25 birds (Continued on Page S)
